Garden Flowers of South Urals

The South Ural gardeners are finding pleasure in cultivating garden flowers. The country people grubbed beautiful forest and field flowers and carried them to their gardens. Many of these flowers are considered as the cultivated and garden plants. At present time, "paradise" came to those who are fond of flowers, because there are many seeds of various species and kinds for sale. Selection is limited only by the size of gardener purse and by the garden climate. What flowers in the gardens!

South Urals summer is frequently hot and has rains enough for plant growing; it allows gardeners to cultivate various kinds of thermophyte plants and flowers. All the pictures at the site were taken on one garden place. From April until September various flowers succeed each other, some of flowers blossom in early spring, others – in summer, and the third ones – before autumn frost.

Blueflags. Blueflags (Iris) belong to the family Iridaceae (which also includes cornflags). Flowers of irises have original form and very beautiful. There are two wild-growing species - Iris pseudacorus [left picture] and Iris sibirica [see "Continuation"] – which were cultivated long ago as adornment plants. The blueflags (irises) are perennial herbaceous plant with a height more than 1 meter. The blueflags have large rootstock, and the rootstocks of Iris pseudacorus are used in medicine. Garden violet. There are 20 species of wild violets (family Violaceae) in Russia. The wild-growing violets are perennial or annual plants, which can be found during weeding on the garden area. Continuation...

Castor-oil plant (Ricinus communis). It is a perennial plant from the tropical Africa, which is cultivated as adornment annual plant in South Urals. The castor-oil plant has reddish digitipartite leaves, ordinary flowers (right picture), and interesting fruit (left picture). In South Urals, the plant can grow up to 1 meter and higher. Tulips. As to literature data, there are two wild-growing species of tulips in Russia (family Liliaceae), but there is no information for South Urals. The cultivated kinds are well known and widespread. There is no garden without growing tulips. The tulip variety is striking: red, yellow, white, diversicolored; classical and double-flowering; etc. The possible catalogue of tulips with pictures can make up more than a great volume. Roses. The current form of rose (Rosa, family Rosaceae) is well known for more than 5000 years. As to literature data, the flower was famous in Sumer. Columbines. Columbines (Aquilegia) are perennial herbaceous plants (family Ranunculaceae) with interesting form of flowers. There are four wild-growing species of columbines in Russia, the well-known species is European columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris). It is widely cultivated as adornment. Lilies and Hemerocallis. Lilies and Hemerocallis belong to the family Liliaceae. There is one wild-growing species in South Urals - martagon lily (Lilium martagon), bulbs of which are edible (our parents eat them during famines).
