First Spring Flowers

April, snow has not disappeared yet, and there are only small parts of melted land. There, the first flowers have turned yellow. This is coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara). If you look at the macro pictures of these flowers, it becomes clear, that the coltsfoot belongs to the family Compositae.

The coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the family Compositae. The sprouts with flowers appear in early spring (March – April), then at the end of May they produce seeds and disappear. After that, the leaves grow. The coltsfoot is the first source of nectar and pollen for wild insects and honey bees. The coltsfoot may be a weed for gardeners.

At the same time, with the coltsfoot, the willow (Salix sp. from the family Salicaceae) begins to blossom. In Russia, sticks with white villous burst buds are used for the Palm Sunday, because these are the first flowers in the cold spring period. The white villous burst buds are developed into male or female flowers, depending on a tree (male or female). The male flowers give important pollen, which is used by honey bees for nourishing their young spring generation after wintering.
